After years of working for Google's in secret 'X-project', the company is beginning to speak more publicly about what its autonomous vehicle can do. Around two dozen members of the press assembled near Google's headquarters at the museum, to meet with the project members of the self-driving car and with a panel of experts on transportation, auto safety, and urban issues.
The interior of the Lexus RX450h has the same leather seats and wood accents as a normal Lexus hybrid, and there are few signs that show it has been transformed.
"Google's cars have never 'caused' an accident in self-driving mode, although they have been involved in a few fender benders, such as an incident in which a Google car stopped at a red light got rear-ended..", said Chris Urmson, the head of Google's self-driving car project.
Google's driverless car uses LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technology to see what's around them. The system, which is mounted on top of, and in the very middle of the vehicles, spins constantly to evaluate its surroundings. As of two years ago, Google said the systems cost $70,000 per car.
But in case of driverless cars, consumer acceptance and regulation will be as much important as perfecting the technology for the purpose of driving without user intervention. What do you think about this awesome future Project X of Google?
